What is Leprosy?

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The disease mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.

What are the symptoms of leprosy?

The main symptoms of leprosy include:



  • Muscle weakness.
  • Numbness in the hands, arms, feet, and legs.
  • Decreased sensation to touch, temperature, or pain.
    • How does leprosy transmit?

    Leprosy is a mildly infectious disease. It is not hereditary and cannot be caught by touch. Scientists believe it is caught through droplets of moisture passed through the air from someone who has leprosy but has not yet started treatment. It takes years, however, of living in close proximity with an untreated leprosy patient to catch the disease. Around 95 per cent of people are thought to be naturally immune to leprosy.

    How is Leprosy treated?

    With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be cured. People with Hansen's disease can continue to work and lead an active life during and after treatment. It is treated with a combination of antibiotics. Typically, 2 or 3 antibiotics are used at the same time. This is called multidrug therapy. This strategy helps prevent the development of antibiotic resistance by the bacteria, which may otherwise occur due to length of the treatment.
